WP1: Assessment and evaluation of added value for holistic renovation projects

Objectives: The objectives of WP1 are to establish a framework for the development of a holistic framework for the future energy renovation process, and documenting how added value can be obtained and assessed. The framework will be established based on state-of-the-art literature review and empirical knowledge results obtained from 1:1 demonstration projects. Especially focus will be given to qualitative aspects (architectural) which often are disregarded in methodologies for assessment of added value in renovation projects.

Description of work: Several methodologies for evaluation and assessment of building performances have been proposed through time. The Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) from the 1960’s has been the foundation for many assessment methods and tools related to the building design process with a focus on new building projects. However, many can also be used for building renovation as well, and some are specifically aimed at renovation projects. Most methods and tools have energy performance as the main focus and have a lack of holistic aspects. Recently published research results considering added value in renovation projects have concluded that future research has to address added economic, social and cultural value in addition to added technical value. These issues are addressed in five 5 tasks routed in a meta-study research approach that draws upon and distills many sources of data, ideas, explanations, and methods in order to accelerate knowledge production beyond that of less integrative approaches.

Task 1.1: State-of-the-art literature review.

A critical literature review of assessment methods and tools related to building renovation projects is conducted. Interview survey and case study will be included. Stakeholders’ involvement in the decision process will be an important issue to outline.

Task 1.2: Assessment of added value due to innovation in construction processes. 

Experiences and results from the tasks 2.1- 2.4 regarding innovation in the construction processes will be analyzed regarding added value.

Task 1.3: Assessment of added value due to innovative technical energy renovation solution. 

Experiences and results from the tasks 3.1- 4.4 regarding innovative technical solutions for energy renovation will be analyzed regarding added value.

Task 1.4: Assessment of added value due to architectural aspects. 

Task 1.4 has focus on added value due to development of architectural solutions, which are capable of articulating and realizing the architectural potential within the transformation process in renovation projects.

Task 1.5: Development of holistic framework for assessment of added value in building renovation.

This task will evaluate and further develop renovation assessment methods. The outset will be the total value model, which will be evaluated and further shaped in order to take in all aspects of a holistic renovation process.
